FAMILY SCULPTURE DEMONSTRATION (FAMILY DYNAMICS/CHILDREN OF

There will also be children from homes disrupted by other family dysfunctions who have much in common with COAs. In these families members tend to adjust their behaviors and take on certain roles to cope with the family problem. These survival roles frequently become compulsive, choiceless, and self-destructive. UNDERSTANDING ALCOHOL TEACHING MODULE
http://science.education.nih.gov/supplements/nih3/alcohol/guide/guide_toc.htm
A web-based
teaching module with six lessons, activities and worksheets. “Understanding
Alcohol: Investigations into Biology and Behavior has four objectives.
The first is to help students understand how alcohol consumption affects the
functioning of the body. By focusing on the scientific issues that explain how
the body reacts to alcohol, the module seeks to help students make informed
decisions about the use of alcohol in their lives.
The
second objective is to use the topic of alcohol as a way to understand
important scientific concepts. The activities in this module incorporate
concepts such as concentration and solubility (miscibility), as well as build
important skills in observation, critical thinking, experimental design, and
data analysis. The third objective is
to convey to students the purpose of scientific research. Scientific research
changes the way we understand the world around us and gives us the foundation
for improving our choices about our personal health and the health of the
public. In this module, students see that science provides evidence that can be
used to support ways of understanding and treating human disease. Because the
mission of NIAAA includes increasing the public’s understanding about the
causes, consequences, treatment, and prevention of alcoholism and
alcohol-related problems, the Institute believes that education provides one
context in which it can fulfill its mission.
We
have designed the lessons in this module to encourage students to think about
the relationships among knowledge, choice, behavior, and enhanced human health
in this way:
Knowledge
(what is known and not known) + Choice = Power
Power +
Behavior = Enhanced Human Health
The final objective is to encourage students to think
in terms of these relationships now and as they grow older.” Excellent

bad. But... he might listen to you. After all, you're almost his
age. That's what your friend Moby is counting on. He has asked you and
your friends to convince his brother to quit smoking. To do so, you must create
a message that he will listen to. Do a good job - it could be a matter of

provides information is called a public service announcement (PSA). Each
PSA must focus on only one tobacco product: cigarette smoking, cigar
smoking, or chewing tobacco. As a group, your job will be to learn about
tobacco use and its effects, to learn about effective persuasive writing
techniques, to create a commercial targeted to young people, to produce this
commercial using PowerPoint or videotape, to convince the American Cancer
Society to buy television time to air your commercial, and to recommend which

TOBACCO USE – A WEBQUEST
http://www.berksiu.k12.pa.us/webquest/Musket/
A webquest on tobacco use for junior/senior high students. “The word is out on you! Your persuasive skills and knowledge about the facts are the tops and some parents really need your help! Here is your mission should you choose to accept it. You have been hired by the parents of a boy named Troy. They believe Troy is on the verge of becoming a chain smoker. His parents have given him all of the literature, lectured him over and over and even sent him through D.A.R.E and other anti-tobacco programs. Troy, however, simply refuses to believe everyone's information. After all, smoking seems to be depicted quite often as cool in movies and in television. They've hired you because of your age connection to sway his mind and convince him of all the dangers that lurk behind the so-called glamour of smoking and get him to quit. To do this, you must present an extremely convincing case towards the fight against youth using tobacco and help change his unfortunate path.” Note: We found a couple of broken links on this site. Very Good
SHOULD SMOKING BE ILLEGAL? – WEBQUEST http://web.mala.bc.ca/webquests3/smoking/lesson-template1.htm
A webquest for 7th grade students on smoking. “Your mission if you choose to accept it is to research all the implications surrounding the issue of smoking. As members of the CBC research team you will be placed in groups of three. In order to complete your mission you will be required to take the following steps: • the first researcher will determine the effects of smoking on the human body. • the second researcher will investigate the relationship between smoking and advertising, and how this advertising impacts the economy. • the third researcher will determine if anti-smoking advertisements, websites, or campaigns of any sort are effective in reducing teenage smoking. • once the research is complete, your group will evaluate all of the information gathered. You will then create a Venn diagram on poster board comparing the pros and cons of smoking and tobacco use in British Columbia. • the final task will be to air a simulated newscast informing the public on the final tobacco debate decision. Using a video camera, you will be required to show a debate that takes place between those that support and those that oppose tobacco use. After the debate, the news reporter will announce the final decision surrounding smoking in British Columbia. There may be a variety of solutions ranging from total abolishment, to smoking with some restrictions, to complete legal smoking with no confinements.” Note: Written for British Columbia, you’ll need to adapt it. You will have a list of the magazines that tobacco companies choose to advertise in the most, and those magazines who run no tobacco ads. You will select individual ads and analyze and identify the message the ads are sending to people. You will then redraw and redesign the ad to tell the truth about smoking. Finally, you will write letters to the tobacco companies and magazines letting them know your thoughts on the messages they are sending.” Note: The Resources section lists URLs but does not link directly.
